Medline, located in Northfield, IL, welcomed thirteen students from Baker College Prep for a week long internship program earlier this summer. The program provides Baker students with an educational experience that helps develop professional skills and critical thinking skills in a setting that exposes them to the many opportunities available at a company like Medline.
Students were divided into four teams and worked alongside a team of coaches made up of Medline employees from different areas of the company. Each team was tasked with selecting an audience and product category to research, with the goal of ultimately creating a product marketing strategy. The students were challenged to think critically about their audiences, distinguish between research and their own assumptions, and determine appropriate channels and methods for communication.
Beyond the student project, the internship program also featured a number of workshops throughout the week, including career planning, presentation skills, and shadows of marketing and product management roles. Students visited our Mundelein facilities to learn more about the manufacturing and R&D side of the business. The week culminated with project presentations for the entire company and a graduation-like ceremony.
In 2018, Nancy and Andy Mills, of Medline and co-founders of Baker College Prep, found a unique opportunity to support the school’s college persistence goals by offering students an internship experience. Medline works closely withBaker College Prep staff to select students that meet defined academic, discipline and attendance criteria. Medline staff have developed a program to ensure students experience a day in the life of an employee and successfully find solutions to the challenges presented through the project. The Baker College Prep internship is truly a highlight of the summer for everyone at Medline.
