ABOUT GARY COMER – OUR CAMPUS NAMESAKE

Gary Comer grew up in Chicago’s Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood before becoming a world-class sailor, founder of Lands’ End in 1963, and a visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist.

His lifelong commitment to expanding opportunity led him to establish the Comer Science and Education Foundation, dedicated to improving urban education and the lives of young people. That mission took shape in 2006 with the opening of the Gary Comer Youth Center (GCYC), designed to provide safe, inspiring spaces where students could discover passions, develop leadership, and prepare for their futures.

Just two years later, Gary Comer College Prep opened its doors as the next step in that vision, ensuring students not only had access to a high-quality education, but also the pathways, supports, and inspiration to thrive in college, career, and life.

CAMPUS HISTORY

On August 18, 2008, Gary Comer College Prep welcomed its first class of ninth graders. Four years later, in 2012, our founding class graduated—marking the beginning of a tradition of sending Catamounts into the world equipped for higher education and long-term success.

In 2010, we opened our state-of-the-art high school building, integrated with the Gary Comer Youth Center. This unique partnership gives students access to after-school, weekend, and summer programming that deepens learning and connection beyond the classroom.

In 2011, GCCP expanded to include a middle school based within GCYC. Today, the 6–8 program provides a strong academic and cultural foundation that flows directly into our high school, ensuring continuity of learning and community.

Currently, GCCP serves more than 1000 students in grades 6–12. As a campus, we are committed to advancing long-term economic and social mobility for our students and alumni. Our work continues Gary Comer’s legacy: combining academic excellence, innovative pathways, and deep community roots to prepare young people not just to graduate, but to lead choice-filled lives and transform the communities they call home.

MISSION

At Gary Comer College Prep 6-12, we believe every student deserves access to an excellent education that opens doors, regardless of background, zip code, or starting point. Our mission is to develop independent thinkers, courageous problem solvers, and compassionate leaders prepared to thrive in middle school, high school, college, and careers.

We envision a future where our alumni are competitive in the workforce, living choice-filled lives, and are agents of positive change in their communities.
