Noble Schools’ Diverse Leaders Fellowship (DLF) program proudly welcomed the fellows of Cohort Seven to our growing community this school year. Cohort Seven is composed of 13 emerging leaders of color representing 10 different Noble spaces. They are currently impacting the network through a variety of roles (teachers, deans, case managers, directors, etc), and have a wide wealth of experiences and expertise. We are excited to see how they will continue to grow in their leadership during their DLF journey.

Amit Khatkhate | Butler College Prep
Case Manager
After immigrating to the United States from India as an infant, Amit Khatkhate grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, and later, Skokie, Illinois. After serving as an Army officer for several years, Khatkhate felt compelled to change fields and entered a space in which he would eventually have lasting purpose and passion.
In 2013, he began his journey in education as an Indiana Teaching Fellow. In 2015, Khatkhate transitioned to specializing in working with diverse learners, becoming a learning specialist at DRW College Prep. He eventually became DRW’s case manager, in 2021. During his eight years at DRW, Khatkhate led numerous enrichments, brought multiple programs to DRW, such as Urban Alliance & 100 Cameras, supported countless families, and taught hundreds of students. Most recently, Khatkhate transitioned from the West Side to the South Side, where he has continued to make an impact in student services at Butler College Prep.
Q: What is your favorite song right now?
A: I listen to a lot of older stuff, and I really just listen to whatever comes on and don’t really think too deeply about it, at least not consciously. Perhaps I need to practice more mindfulness in this area for the future!
Q: What is one thing (outside of work) that is bringing you joy?
A: My wife and our dog (Phil) enjoyed the WNBA Playoffs recently.
Apiphany Asberry | UIC College Prep
Environmental & Earth Space Science Teacher
Apiphany Asberry, originally hailing from Gary, IN, but primarily raised in Minneapolis, MN, is a dynamic individual with a rich array of experiences. After earning her Bachelor of Science, she embarked on her teaching journey, and a decade later, she continues to thrive in the field, never looking back. Following her years of successful teaching, Asberry pursued her master’s in sports administration/management at Southern New Hampshire University, showcasing her ongoing pursuit of knowledge and professional growth.
Beyond her academic and professional pursuits, Asberry’s interests extend to the world of sports and sneakers. Asberry quickly became the former basketball player turned sneaker-head. Recently, she also discovered a love for running. Asberry is also a proud member of The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated.

A: My babies, Aubrey and A’mare.
Brenna Rivas | Johnson College Prep
Spanish Teacher
Brenna Rivas, embarking on her fifth year of teaching, stands as a stalwart advocate for both teacher wellness and student experiences.
As a first-generation college graduate, Rivas champions the transformative power of education, viewing it as a life-changing experience for her students. She intertwines student experiences with academic learning, creating spaces where memories are made and belonging is found. With a steadfast commitment to fostering global citizenship, Brenna guides her students towards becoming empowered individuals who are not only academically proficient but also socially conscious contributors to society.

Chantel “Shannon” Jones | DRW College Prep
Director of Athletics & Physical Education
Chantel Jones, a proud product and pillar of the North Lawndale community, has served DRW with distinction since joining in January 2017. Starting from a foundational role in maintaining school culture, Jones quickly distinguished himself through his strong work ethic, leadership skills, and dedication to student success. Over the years, Jones transitioned to the role of director of athletics and physical education, where he has been instrumental in shaping the sports program and promoting physical fitness among students.
His leadership extends beyond the athletic field, as he actively engages with students, parents, and fellow educators to foster a positive and inclusive environment. Jones’ unwavering dedication to the North Lawndale community and his profound influence on the DRW culture make him a beacon of inspiration and a true asset to the organization.

Q: What is one thing (outside of work) that is bringing you joy?
A: Truthfully, I am still seeking to find out more ways to bring joy to myself. However, after discussing relational love, I’m looking to become more invested in investing in my relationships with my loved ones.
Charles “Chuck” Teverbaugh | Hansberry College Prep
Assistant Dean of Culture
Charles “Chuck” Teverbaugh is a seasoned professional with diverse experiences who embarked on a journey of self-discovery and purpose alignment. Transitioning from a career as a correctional officer in the Indiana Penal System, he recognized his true passion lay in education. He started as a behavioral specialist in Chicago’s esteemed alternative schools. Driven by a deep-seated conviction to follow his calling, Teverbaugh joined the Hansberry College Prep culture team in 2017 as a culture specialist, swiftly earning respect and trust within the community. He was appointed assistant dean of culture in 2022.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Teverbaugh is a devoted family man, cherishing his role as a husband and father to eight children. A proud alumnus of Olive Harvey College, his journey reflects a commitment to lifelong learning and a steadfast dedication to empowering the next generation.

A: Djo’s “End of the Beginning”. Learned about it from TikTok. It has a nice groove to it, and anytime Chicago is referenced in a song, it gets more play from me.

A: Cosplaying and going to conventions.
Erica Allen | Gary Comer College Prep
Dean of Instruction
Erica Allen was born and raised on Chicago’s West Side in the North Lawndale neighborhood. She is an alumna of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, where she graduated Magna Cumme Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration and Pre-Medicine. Prior to her transition to education, Allen maintained a professional career in health administration. Allen joined Noble in 2018 and in her fourth year at Noble, Allen attained a Master of Education in Educational Research. In 2023, Allen transitioned to Gary Comer College Prep to serve as a dean of instruction for sciences & social science.
Allen enjoys fellowship, shopping, and creating new dining experiences. She spends her free time with her friends, family, and serving the city of Chicago alongside her sisters of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, Inc.

Erika Nicole | Golder College Prep
Environmental Science & Chemistry Teacher
Erika Nicole is a passionate educator, community practitioner, and entrepreneur with over 15 years of experience. She has dedicated her life and career to being a voice for underrepresented youth, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities needed to pursue their dreams.
In addition to her work in education and community advocacy, Nicole is a devoted church member, finding strength and inspiration from her faith. Even as an entrepreneur, she empowers others through her ventures and fosters economic growth in her community. She is also a proud member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., where she continues to uplift and support women and children in various endeavors. Above all, she cherishes being a mother, instilling values of resilience, compassion, and determination even in her own children.

A: Corporate community—meaning gathering with and for purpose. Since honoring my 20th class reunion, the spaces I have been in have been for joy and progress! Support and love! They challenge me and others and helps foster our growth.
Friendella Scott | ITW David Speer Academy
Assistant principal
Friendella Scott is currently the assistant principal at ITW David Speer Academy where she has been since the summer of 2020. She moved here from Memphis at the height of the pandemic and is happy to be putting down roots, and making an educational impact, in Chicago.
As the eldest daughter of a single mother, she has the unique experience of understanding that education is liberation and seeks it for all that she comes in contact with; whether they want it or not. She finds herself living by the quote “Freedom is choosing your responsibility. It’s not having no responsibilities. It’s choosing the ones you want.” So, she chooses to be in spaces, and places, that are in service to children who look like her in order to be truly free and to free others.
Q: What is your favorite song right now?
A: My favorite song right now is “Falling Behind” by Laufey because there are times when I feel behind in certain areas of my life even though, to others, I appear to be “ahead.”
Q: What is one thing (outside of work) that is bringing you joy?
A: One thing that’s bringing me joy right now is watching K dramas.
Juan Pablo “JP” Esquivel | Mansueto High School
Learning Specialist
Juan Pablo “JP” Esquivel is a dedicated STEM educator, learning behavior specialist, and fervent advocate for equity in education. He was recognized by the Illinois Board of Education with the “Those Who Excel” and “Teacher of the Year Special Recognition” awards in 2023.
Currently, he serves on the Noble Alumni Board, Phi Iota Alpha’s National Board of Trustees, and participates in the Illinois Advance Teacher Advisory Council, among other roles. His participation in the first cohort of the Liberated Educators Collaborative and the Latino Forum’s Multicultural Leadership Academy in 2024 highlights his ongoing commitment to professional growth and community building within education.

Justin Boyd | UIC College Prep
Band Director & Fine Arts Facilitator
Justin Boyd is a highly esteemed music educator and performer. His passion for music began in his youth. During his formative years he performed regularly in various ensembles which led to him studying music in college. While studying in college, Boyd began working professionally and touring internationally with artist of different genres. He has performed on radio and television. He also leads his own ensemble. In addition to performing, Boyd has provided performing arts services to schools in the Chicagoland area for over fifteen years.
He is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago and DePaul University. After completing his master’s studies Boyd worked in an elementary school and that’s where music education became his primary focus. Boyd is currently the fine arts department facilitator at UIC College Prep where he teaches courses in band and general music.

Kevin McLurkin | Noble Support Team
Alumni Success Coach
Kevin McLurkin was born and raised on the southside of Chicago. He earned his bachelor’s degree in African American Studies and Communication from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2019. For the past four years, he’s been an alumni success coach at the Noble Schools. He also has a profound commitment to social justice, advocating tirelessly for causes that resonate with his values. He is a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., where he continues to make an impact on his community. What truly excites Kevin is forming connections with students who share his background.
Ultimately, Kevin’s overarching goal is to effect systemic changes within colleges, creating environments that empower black and brown students to successfully graduate from four-year institutions. His other interests include music management, travel, and fantasy football.

Melanie “Mel” Chwee | UIC College Prep
College & Career Counselor
After getting a degree in math education from Illinois State University, Melanie Chwee moved to Chicago and taught in high schools in Pilsen and West Garfield Park. She started working at UICCP as an in-house sub as a transition from being a classroom teacher. In 2021, she joined the college and career counseling team as a counselor.
She loves working more closely with students to help them take steps towards their future goals and prepare them for success after graduation. One goal that she continues to work towards is making sure that all of our students have the opportunity to explore their passions and talents.

Ronda Coleman | Butler College Prep
Director of Operations & Admission
Ronda Coleman, affectionately known as Momma Coleman to staff and students at Butler College Prep, is the director of operations and admission at Butler and an alumni parent of Gary Comer College Prep. She has been a founding employee of Butler since July 2013.
In 2010, she helped create and oversee Noble’s first Parent Advisory Council known today as PAC. She also created and now oversees the Ahsa Enrollment Ambassadors, which allows her to work closely with the students at Butler.
Coleman will be celebrating thirty-two blessed years of marriage in June. She is a mother of two beautiful daughters, ages 29 and 37, and her grandson, four. Coleman loves music and dancing. It’s known the party doesn’t start until she arrives. She believes her strong Christian faith in God keeps her grounded as a wife, mom, grandma, and employee. To know her is to love her and be ready to have a good time.
