In this episode, we talk to Kelsey Taylor, the Athletic Director at Baker College Prep, and two student-athletes at Baker.

Taylor touches on what it means to be an Athletic Director and how athletics play a role in creating an antiracist experience for our students. She also discusses how the changes in Noble’s policies affect how students engage with athletics and other extra-curriculars at Noble.

Lastly, we hear from two student-athletes at Baker, Dashia and Christian, on how they feel about the changes and how it has changed their experience of growth through athletics and finding community in high school.

Kelsey Taylor, Athletic Director, Baker College Prep

Kelsey Taylor, athletic director and project coordinator at Baker College Prep

Kelsey Taylor works part-time at Baker College Prep as the Project Coordinator and Athletic Director. She is also currently working on completing a graduate program at Loyola University Chicago for her Master of Education in School Counseling degree.

Taylor grew up in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago and completed her Bachelor of Business Administration degree at the University of Notre Dame. After that, she proceeded to work as a Higher Education Technology Analyst at a consulting firm in Chicago. After a couple of years in Corporate America, she chose to make a career shift and enter the education sector through Teach for America.

She joined the Indianapolis Corps and received her Master of Arts in Teaching from Marian University. Throughout her time in Indianapolis, she taught a variety of secondary math classes, head coached the varsity girls soccer team, and assistant coached the varsity girls basketball team. It was in Indianapolis that she affirmed her lifelong love of learning and athletics, and ignited her passion for working in education with adolescents.

She moved back home to Chicago after completing her program and proceeded to join Baker College Prep as an Algebra 1 teacher. She has continued to coach and fill various roles over the last few years at Baker.

She has loved her time in the classroom, and she’s excited to embark on her journey as a school counselor where she hopes to provide holistic support to students as they navigate their own life journeys.

Dashia Bass, Senior, Baker College Prep

Dashia Bass, varsity girls basketball player and student at Baker College Prep

Dashia Bass is a senior at Baker College Prep. She started going to Baker in the 10th grade and has been playing on the girls’ varsity basketball team ever since. She plays as a pointguard.

Christian Booker, Senior, Baker College Prep

Christian Booker, student athlete at Baker College Prep

Christian is also a senior at Baker College Prep. He’s been at Baker since his freshman year. In 9th grade, he played on the soccer team. This spring, he plans to do track & field.
